Firstly, you should consider where you are considering your Career choices and job opportunities. If you have nothing to tie you to your current location, then consider moving. It could be that business expansion in your current location has remained stagnant, so you would be better off thinking about New careers in different areas. This will noticeably increase the amount of Career choices you can consider. Of course, considering moving will not be an option for everyone – you may have current responsibilities such as looking after family which make relocating tricky. However, if it is something you can think about, then go for it. It will boost the number of New careers you can consider.
Another thing to think about – are you only looking at full time work? If yes, then perhaps it is time to contemplate part time work as well. After all, part time hours are better than no hours at all, and there is generally the possibility that if you impress your manager enough after obtaining a part-time job you may be able to progress to full time work within that business. Even if there is little chance of you being able to start full time work there, it will at least fill in a gap in your CV. It will also get you references for when you are able to find a more suitable career.
Work on any ‘weaknesses’ you might have. If you don’t seem to be getting interviews with businesses, check your CV is suitable for the sort of Careers you are applying to. Look online for CV writing information and see if you can make better. If you can get the interviews but never seem to have any joy there, then perhaps your interview skills have need of some work. Think about questions that you have had difficulty with in the past, and use your time to think up fitting answers to these sorts of questions. Think about the kind of questions you might be asked beforehand, and prepare your answers then. You cannot expect to prepare for every possibility, but you should be in better stead if you do at least some preparation.
Another alternative to think about is increasing your contact network. Do not solely rely on friends and family to provide you with contacts and job opportunities. Their companies may not be performing too well either. Try getting back in touch with old managers and co-workers; perhaps you could even look at applying at a business you have worked at before. Try and spread the word at any clubs or associations you are a associate of that you are searching for jobs and considering New careers. This will radically increase the number of Career choices open to you.
